چکیده

UNLABELLED The computational modeling of language development has enabled researchers to make impressive strides toward achieving a comprehensive psychological account of the processes and mechanisms whereby children acquire their mother tongues. Nevertheless, the field's primary focus on distributional information has lead to little progress in elucidating the processes by which children learn to compute meanings beyond the level of single words. This lack of psychologically motivated computational work on semantics poses an important challenge for usage-based computational accounts of acquisition in particular, which hold that grammatical development is closely tied to meaning. In the present review, we trace some initial steps toward answering this challenge through a survey of existing computational models of grammatical development that incorporate semantic information to learn to assign thematic roles and acquire argument structure. We argue that the time is ripe for usage-based computational accounts of grammatical development to move beyond purely distributional features of the input, and to incorporate information about the objects and actions observable in the learning environment. To conclude, we sketch possible avenues for extending previous approaches to modeling the role of semantics in grammatical development. A Computational Usage-Based Model for Learning General Properties of Semantic Roles

We present a Bayesian model of early verb learning that acquires a general conception of the semantic roles of predicates based only on exposure to individual verb usages. The model forms probabilistic associations between the semantic properties of arguments, their syntactic positions, and the semantic primitives of verbs. Because of the model’s Bayesian formulation, the roles naturally shift ...

From cradle to control verbs Extending constructivist models beyond simple syntax

In recent years, several computational models (Alishahi & Stevenson 2008, Chang 2008, Bannard, Lieven & Tomasello 2009) have begun fulfilling the promise of usage-based construction grammar (Tomasello 2003, Goldberg 2006) as a computationally testable account of the acquisition of grammar.1 In simulating specific developmental patterns, such as the generalization of argument structure construct...

Learning General Properties of Semantic Roles from Usage Data: A Computational Model

Semantic roles are a critical aspect of linguistic knowledge because they indicate the relations of the participants in an event to the main predicate. Experimental studies on children and adults show that both groups use associations between general semantic roles such as Agent and Theme, and grammatical positions such as Subject and Object, even in the absence of familiar verbs. Other studies...

5 . Toward a force - dynamic theory of argument

In the preceding chapters, we presented an analysis of lexical aspect that integrates the many lexical aspectual distinctions relevant to grammar with grammatical consequences into a single model. The model analyzes the aspectual structure of events as a temporal sequence of qualitatively distinct phases. The phases are represented in two geometric dimensions, time and qualitative states. In th...

Using Grammatical Roles to Improve Statistical Machine Translation

Statistical machine translation systems often struggle to preserve predicateargument structure. We present a new hierarchical machine translation model that explicitly captures the grammatical roles taken on by the words and phrases being translated (e.g., subject, object, and indirect object). Although existing hierarchical and syntax-based grammars can capture how many arguments a predicate t...
